The committee will strive to develop productive programs as well as cooperate with any appropriate public or private entity of the development and administration of such programs, which will aid in the enrichment and self-sufficiency of the disabled community.

Medical Aid Loan Closet
Disabilities that are temporary or transitional still present an immediate need for durable, medical aids. To avoid purchasing these aids, residents may check them out for free, short-term use. The following items may be loaned from the Medical Closet:

transfer boards
toilet chairs
canes
crutches
shower chairs

Disabilities Resource Guide
A comprehensive listing of agencies who assist people with disabilities, as well as individuals involved in many special circumstances. There is information on phone numbers and contact listings for the following categories:
Abuse in Families – child, domestic, elder, etc.
Assistance Programs – food, clothing, legal, tax, and utility
Emergency Assistance Programs
Community Services – counseling, crisis intervention, education, senior citizen services, drug abuse, etc.

Upcoming Events
September 7, 2008 is the 7th Annual Picnic for Plainfield Residents with Disabilities and Families.
The Plainfield Disabilities Committee will host their 7th annual picnic FREE for those with special needs and their families at River Edge Recreation Center. There will be live entertainment, food and games for all who attend. A DJ will be spinning the tunes and coordinating the line dances, games and prizes throughout the afternoon.

Special Events
We have sponsored several events in conjunction with the Plainfield Park District. Watch for information on dates, times, and registration in the seasonal Plainfield Park District brochures. Fliers are also sent home from the special education programs within the Plainfield Schools. These events served people with disabilities in the community and their families, including:
Winter Bowling and Pizza Party at Pioneer Lanes
Summer Swim Party at the Ottawa Street Pool
Fall Family Picnic at River Edge Recreation Center – FREE!
We would love to expand our support for people with disabilities in the community. This requires participation. Individuals with disabilities need not live in Plainfield to attend events, non-residents are encouraged to participate too!
